The Natural Toxins Research Center (NTRC) at Texas A&M University-Kingsville was developed through a series of successful research endeavors that started in 1972. The Center was formally established in March 2000 and is the only federally funded viper research center in the United States. It also serves as one of the leading research centers in the world for discovering toxins that can be used in biomedical research. The Center develops collaborative research programs and has a mission to provide global research, training & resources that will lead to the discovery of medically important toxins found in snake venoms. These toxins contain thousands of molecules that NTRC researchers are isolating, characterizing, cloning as they are being investigated for use in treatments for strokes, heart attacks and cancer. The research complex housed at A. L. Kleberg Hall has 7,000 square feet and state-of-the-art instrumentation for biomedical research. The NTRC maintains a serpentarium with 4,383 square feet of space and houses 450-500 venomous snakes from 24 different species consisting of 32 subspecies. The serpentarium will eventually include all venomous snakes in North America.
